Original Request from ET Chapter:

Hello Dave:

At ET-KTSAF’s breakfast meeting on July 5, 2000, members present discussed and came to agreement that KTSAF should be requested to appoint a committee to evaluate AF&PA’s and FSC’s forest management certification programs from our professional point of view. At the end of this message, in quotes, is the text of our requested action.

Committee membership should come from best qualified volunteer in each area of expertise from throughout KT area. You may, of course, contact me, or other ET members, if you have any questions or if you need assistance in filling committee membership from East Tennessee.

For information of all concerned SAF recently published a report titled "1999 Report on Forest Management Certification." This report is available on the SAF web site at: http://www.safnet.org/policy/fmcp1999.html.

"The East Tennessee Chapter of the Kentucky-Tennessee Society of American Foresters requests that the KTSAF appoint a committee to evaluate the Forest Stewardship Council’s ‘Certification and Labeling Program’ and the American Forest & Paper Association’s ‘Sustainable Forest InitiativeSM’ program. Committee’s mission is to prepare a proposed policy stand with regard to these certification programs for Kentucky and Tennessee. Committee should submit proposed policy report to KTSAF Executive Committee (President and Policy Chair) by end of November 2000 for discussion and possible adoption by the Executive Committee and the membership at the KTSAF 2001 winter meeting. Membership of committee should consist of individuals representing the following areas of forest management expertise: forest economics, silviculture, forest policy, on-the-ground forest management, and forest products."

Best Regards,

Ed Smith
